The Fitzgerald Cocktail

Now that 80 degrees is a regular occurrence here in Michigan for the summer, the back deck has become our regular evening place to hang out.  We listen to Tiger baseball (even when they are awful!), catch up on the day’s events, and enjoy reading and sipping a delicious cocktail!  One of Chris’s favorite summer books to reread is The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Fitzgerald was a connoisseur of gin, and this cocktail is named for him.

If you enjoyed the Buster Brown cocktail, this one is essentially the same idea, but made with gin.  To make this work best, you need to have VERY chilled glasses.  I like to use oversized martini glasses, and put them in the freezer ahead of time to add a nice frosty touch.

1.5 oz gin – bombay sapphire works nicely
.5 oz lemon juice – you can kick this up to 1 oz if you like a fruitier taste
.5 oz simple syrup – this can be increased to 1 oz if you like a bit more sweetness
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake until cold and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

The Buster Brown

Well, this little gem is a bourbon based cocktail, but with a refreshing lemon twist to it.  It is very yummy.  I was first introduced to it at Zingerman’s Roadhouse in Ann Arbor, where they have quite a list of old style classic cocktails.  It is an easy one to make, and great on a warm summer night, sitting on the back porch!

1.5 oz bourbon
.5 oz lemon juice – you can kick this up to 1 oz if you like a fruitier taste
.5 oz simple syrup – this can be increased to 1 oz if you like a bit more sweetness
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake until cold and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with the lemon twist.

The Boulevardier

Sitting in the Bengal Lounge at the Fairmont Hotel on Vancouver Island in the city of Victoria, I was introduced to the Boulevardier.  It is a bourbon version of the Negroni, and a very tasty alternative.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.  It is a nice easy cocktail to learn.  Be sure to serve it in a chilled cocktail glass, for the full effect!

1.5 oz bourbon
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz campari
Orange twist or cherry

Pour ingredients into a mixing glass and fill with cracked ice. Stir well for 20 seconds and strain into a chilled cocktail glass, or serve on the rocks. Garnish with a cherry or a twist of orange peel.

The Rainy Day Negroni

It’s a rainy gloomy day in June and this is my first official Friday cocktail blog post. I have shared the last couple of Friday’s through Facebook and have been getting many requests to keep it up, so here we go with my attempt at a blog.

Retirement certainly provides for the time to experiment and learn new things.  I can’t think of a better place to start than with some of my favorite cocktails.  Over the past few years, it has been fun to learn about mixology in a casual way.  I am damn good at making a Manhattan!  This is largely due to the fact that Chris and I travel regularly through bourbon country on our way to Nashville to visit Nick and Sydney.  So I can blame it on them, for now.

Today’s concoction is a simple Negroni.  This is one of Chris’s favorites and is related to the Boulevardier, that I posted about a couple weeks ago.  The Negroni is made with gin as the primary spirit, while its cousin, the Boulevardier is based on bourbon.  Since warm weather generally signals lighter cocktails, the Negroni seems like a great place to start. Here is the traditional recipe:

1 oz gin
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz campari
orange twist
